SkyTools Guided Tour

Nightly Events Planner

This tool once again displays the familiar NightBar, but with a new twist.  As before the altitude of the object of interest (in this case Jupiter) is drawn as a red dashed line.  But in addition, the time of each circumstance of an event is marked.

This is a quick and easy way to see how visible the event will be from your location.

In the example above we selected the transit of Jupiter's moon Europa (highlighted in blue).  Looking at the NightBar we see that ingress (when the satellite first passes in front of the planet--marked as Tr. I on the NightBar) occurs prior to the onset of twilight, while Jupiter is still fairly low in the sky.

By the time Europa is mid-way across the planet (Tr. M) twilight has begun and Jupiter is fairly high in the sky, offering an excellent view.

Transit egress (Tr. E) occurs after dawn.
