SkyTools 1.x Observing List Downloads

The following observing lists are available for download for use with SkyTools 1.x only.  Click on the list you wish to download and choose to save it to disk when prompted.  For some browsers you may need to right-click on the list and choose to save it.

Please note that SkyTools observing lists are binary files that require our SkyTools software version 1.x to work.

From the main SkyTools window, select the Observing Lists tab. Click on the Import tool on the tool bar (it looks like a down arrow). Select the file you downloaded. The new observing list should now be available from the list.

Current Comets There may be several comets visible tonight in telescopes with apertures of 6" or larger. This observing list contains the brightest comets visible right now. The latest orbital elements are included in the export file, along with coma diameters and magnitude parameters based on recent observations. current_comets.oxp Updated monthly

The Astronomical League's Deep Sky Binocular Club List compiled by John Wagoner (link).  By design, the list contains no Messier objects. Kindly provided by Larry Palmiter. dskybin.oxp Larry: I have made one substitution.  This is for Kemble's Cascade, a remarkable asterism consisting of an almost perfectly straight line of stars 3 degrees long in Camelopardalis.  I have have sustituted NGC 1502, which is in fact locatedat one end of Kemble's Cascade.  This is a very enjoyable collection of open clusters (2 galaxies), many in star fields of special interest.
Carbon Stars: The Reddest of the Red in the May 1998 Sky and  Telescope by Brian Skiff.  Kindly provided by Larry Palmiter. skiffred.oxp Larry: There is one omission from the original: Espin-Birmingham (E-B) 365 located 2' west of Beta Crux. Skiff says this star is not any of the major modern stellar catalogs (except the carbon star catalog).  (I wonder if it isn't TYC 8659-1394, which lies within 10" of his position--Greg). Several of the stars are ordinary M-type variables, included for comparison purposes. These are: V466 Cas, RS Per, R Dor, and Mu Cep.  The rest are carbon stars.
Selected Dark Nebulae from Lynds catalog of dark nebulae. Dark Nebulae.oxp This observing list contains the positions of 543 dark nebulae that were listed in the catalog with degrees of darkness of 5 or greater out of 6. These objects are added to your supplemental stellar database and as such contains no size information. Magnitudes were assigned on the basis of darkness plus 6 (darker nebulae are brighter). We are working on adding dark nebulae to the SkyTools database for the next full release.
The South African Astronomical Observatory Best Sky Objects. This list contains some fabulous Southern Hemisphere treasures. Submitted by Dennis Simmons. SAAO Best Sky Objects.oxp Their web site states: "The list was developed c1990 from the standard sources available at the time, including Burham's, Norton's, Sky and Telescope ("Finest Deepsky Objects" "Finest Binaries" etc.), supplemented by my own viewing in connection with SAAO public evenings. It is preconditioned by what can be conveniently fit on a double-sided single sheet in our telescope domes."

The entire NGC/IC catalogs submitted by Mike Pisto.  NGC-IC.oxp To be honest we don't feel this is the best use of a SkyTools observing list because it is very large and slow. We encourage the use of the Database Power Search to make smaller lists instead. But, if like Mike you absolutely must have it, here it is!

Little-Known Planetaries (from the January issue of Sky & Tel)
The S&T article uses arcane designations for these planetaries. Below is the correspondence between the designations in the article and the PK catalog designations currently used in SkyTools. Note that two of the planetaries have undefined magnitudes in the SkyTools database. Tip: to make these objects visible on the chart, use the planetarium chart with the deep sky limiting magnitude set to 100.

A Star-Hop in the Heart of Orion (from the Jan. '98 issue of Sky & Telescope)
HD37660 & 37664 are the northenmost of the three pairs mentioned in the article: HD37661 & 37662 are the middle pair, HD37641 is the southern pair (it's a binary).

The asterism the article calls "Orion's secret sword handle" is comprised of the following stars, listed in descending declination: HD36827, HR1900, HD36710, HD36864, V1045

The Herschel II List
For various reasons the following objects are not in the primary SkyTools database: NGC 604, NGC 1746, NGC 5447, NGC 5462, and NGC 6997. These objects have been added to the supplemental stellar database and their positions will automatically be imported along with the Herschell II list.

Herschel 400 (I) List (h400.oxp)
Best and Brightest 200 (best_br.oxp)
Messier List (messier.oxp)

Messier list notes: M40 is listed as the double star HD 238107 (because that's what it is), and there are 113 entries because some entries technically describe both an open cluster and a nebula (both are included).
