Headline Sky News

This page primarily lists recent discoveries of visually observable novae, and supernovae. These discoveries are of immediate interest to those who may wish to observe them, so we post announcements here as quickly as possible. Please note that these sorts of discoveries occur relatively rarely; it is possible for weeks or even months to go by without an announcement here.

Mar 1 Bright Supernova in M100
Supernova 2006X
Magnitude: 13.6
Position: R.A. = 12h22m54.0s, Dec. = +15o48'33" (2000)

Reference: IAU 8667
Discovery: on February 7 by Shoji Suzuki; M. Migliardi (CROSS)

This supernova was discovered while it was still brightening.  At that time it was still faint.  As of March 1 it is 13.6 magnitude.  M100 is one of the brighter members of the Virgo cluster of galaxies.  It is currently well placed for observation.  Users of 4-inch or larger scopes under dark skies should be able to detect both the supernova and galaxy.
