It is in Perseus moving slowly. As of November 2 it is holding steady at magnitude 2.2-2.4. Due to the energetic nature of the outburst the primary coma is expanding at a rate of about 1.4' per day. This is the main feature in a telescope or binoculars. At the current rate of expansion the coma will reach a diameter of one degree (twice the size of the full moon) in early December. Within the coma look for a starlike pseudonucleus with a bright blob to one side of it. Some observers believe this blob to be a dust tail seen in projection. Any tail of this comet would be pointing nearly away from us. Observers at dark sites can see an extended outer envelope that is up to 2-3 times larger than the main coma. How long this outburst will last is anyone's guess, but according to Gary W. Kronk's Cometography 17P was discovered during a similar outburst in November of 1892. During that outburst it was a naked-eye object for several weeks.
